Display Format

Timelines can be displayed in an horizontal format (where the axe of time is displayed horizontally and dates increase from left to right) or in a vertical format (where the axe of time is displayed vertically and the dates increase from top to bottom).

WARNING: The vertical display feature is not part of the standard package of the application and requires its own In-App Purchase.

You can select the format to use under the 'Timelines' menu option, then selecting the 'Display' submenu option. You can also switch between the two formats.

Few things to know about the vertical format:

  • When Records are structured in a Hierarchy, each Hierarchy will have its own axe of time. So while the dates on a single axe is always progressing, that might not be the case between two or more axes.

  • Levels are not supported in the vertical format. Records are always displayed sequentially based on their start-date.

  • Date progress on the axe of time is not linear (like with the horizontal format). The space between two consequent dates is dependent on the Granularity being used as well as the number of Records that need to be displayed at a given date.

  • Some configuration variables (e.g., position of the axe of time) are not supported. Those variables are grayed out in the Control Panel when the vertical format is selected.

Finally, while you can switch between the two formats, some timelines are better suited for an horizontal display while other are better suited for a vertical display.

Typically when a timeline contains a lot of records that are overlapping in time (e.g., covering a war where simultaneous battles are taking place on different fronts), the horizontal format might be the better option. On the other hands, timelines with very few records overlapping in time (e.g., timeline of the kings of England) might find the vertical format better.
